★Your name?
Stephanie
★When did you start drawing?
When the Pokemon anime was released in America, I was fascinated with the art style and the monsters themselves. I began creating my own in 1st grade, and began to really focus on drawing. In 3rd grade, I got a How to Draw Manga book and that's what convinced me I wanted to be an artist [of course, I wish I hadn't gotten started with anime, but it did help me learn the basics of anatomy and in some respects, expression.]
★Which hand do you use for drawing?
I'm right handed.
★Which is easier to draw - male or female?
I still can't quite draw men to save my life. Sometimes, yes, but not always.
★Which is easier to draw - long hair or short hair?
Long hair. For some reason, I can never find a way to draw the ends of the short hair without looking the head look deformed. That's something I need to work on.
★Is it easier to draw the head facing towards the right or the left?
I think I draw more towards the left, but both ways work for me.
★Is it easier to draw the side view of the face or the front view?
Sometimes I have trouble with proportions when it comes to front view, but both are easy most of the time.
★What do you have problems in drawing?
Men, some hair styles, unique features, details in clothes [and shoes], feet [getting better], full body animals, perspective, and the environment.
★What do you like to draw?
I like to draw girls a lot. Curvy ones. And on that note, boobs. Boobs are pretty awesome to draw. I've enjoyed drawing hands, recently. I also like drawing cute animals, especially round ones, elves, fairies, things with lots of colors, big lips, some animals, Disney style characters, aaaaaaand fanart some times.
★Are you a traditional artist or a digital artist?
I used to be pretty digital oriented but after The Big Crash of 2009, I've been having trouble easing back into it.
★Where do you start drawing from?
Either the head shape or facial features, generally starting with the eyes. If I'm doing a figure, I sometimes start from the neck.
★What is your drawing habit that you are aware of?
Unlike most people, I tend to draw better with no music on. But on the same note, I also enjoy drawing with the TV on. I also have an incredibly hard time drawing for people, which is why things kiribans and requests seem to never get finished. I don't know why this is. One other, not so much habit, but more of a condition, I've noticed is that I love to draw surrounded by light. For instance, right now, overhead light is on, my desk lamp is on, my fan light is on, and the window is open, bathing the room in what should be enough light. But no, no it isn't. I'm an energy waster, but hey, at least I'm doing art.
★What do you keep in mind when you do lineart?
x| It's been so long, I don't even know anymore.
★Any tips for coloring/shading?
I agree with ~PerfectResolution, that is, DO NOT USE DODGE OR BURN FOR SHADING. Think about your colors ahead of time, especially if it's something you can't undo, but with digital art, feel free to be sloppy. I also recommend using colors for shading. I suggest taking a look at
★How long does it take to finish a piece of art?
Depends on how details it is, I guess. Sometimes I'll be trying out a new coloring or inking style, or it could be a big piece to finish.
★What music do you listen to while you draw?
When I do listen to music, often times it's musical soundtracks or movie scores, though sometimes I just put my library on random. The problem with that is that I need to purge my music, so often times songs I don't want to listen to come up. Podcasts are also a blast to listen to, things like This American Life, Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me!, The Horror, The Moth, aaaand my personal favorite, Made of Fail. Sometimes I also put on movies to just play as background noise. Ooooor I just don't listen to anything at all.
★How long does it take you to come up with an idea?
Eeeeh again, it depends on my mood, whether or not I'm inspired or not.
★Your favorite drawing utensils?
There are these really amazing Mechanical Pencils from Pentel called the Clic Matic Pencil. It's lightweight and has a really firm casing around the lead so that it doesn't break. It holds size .05, which is good for sketching AND detail work, and it's clicky thing is on the grip, so it's easy to get the lead out [heeeeeeh]. I use Prismacolor markers and colored pencils, which I sometimes pair up with oil pastel. For traditional inking, I either use the typical Sakura pens, or if I'm feeling adventurous, black Indian ink. White Guache is also really good for highlights or outlines. Paper... doooesn't really matter to me. For Digital media I use a Wacom Graphire Tablet [a brand I don't think they're doing anything with anymore] and Photoshop CS3.
★Your favorite color/the color that you use a lot?
I love bright, fun colors! Orange and blue can be seen in a lot of my drawings.
★Your favorite style(s)?
Drawings that are cartoony, but manage to also capture realism really well. I love the detail that can go into comic book styles, and I also enjoy really curvy or really geometric characters. Expression is also important. I think the person who captures this the most for me is `alexds1. I also admire a good coloring style.
★Are you satisfied with your current art?
Yes and no. There are a lot of things I need to work on, and some which I'd like to stay the same. Needless to say, it will change.
★What kind of artist are you aiming for?
xD I have no clue. I want to get into comics, but I have no story and I'm not really good with page layout or environment settings, so everything would just be on a white backdrop x] I defenitely am aiming for something Disney-esque, cartoons with realistic features, but I also like having separate styles for abstract, extreme-cartoon, and realism. And no anime plz.
I guess the artist I'm aiming for is one who knows her shit, dawg.
I tag no one! Do it if you want!
